On 21 September 2023, the Parliament of India passed a landmark Women’s Reservation Bill 2023 a major Constitutional Amendment Bill presented by the Government of India with the aim of expanding the participation of women in Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabhas taking forward the resolution of women-led development.

The Women’s Reservation Bill 2023 will pave the way for reserving 33% of the seats in the lower house and the State Legislative Assemblies assemblies for women. This historic step now ensures women's representation at all the three levels of governance: the Local, State and National levels. It has come in continuation to the 73rd and 74th Constitution Amendment Acts that earlier reserved 33% seats for women in municipal bodies and village councils or gram panchayats.
