About Us Renunciation of Indian Citizenship and Surrender of Indian Passport

Indian nationals considering acquisition of foreign citizenship are reminded that the Indian citizenship Act does not provide for dual citizenship. If a holder of Indian passport acquiring citizenship of another country, he/she must immediately surrender his/her Indian passport with the nearest Indian Mission/Post abroad. Unauthorised possession of an Indian passport shall constitute an offence punishable under the Indian Passport Act, 1967.

 

It has been observed that many individuals continue to retain their Indian passports and some even use to travel on Indian passports; there are yet other who get fresh Indian passports issued by suppression of information even several years after they acquired foreign citizenship. Since misuse of Indian Passports, as described above, constitute offences under Section 12 (1A) of the Passports Act 1967, a penalty/fine will be imposed on such violations.

 

 

 

(a) Renunciation of Indian Citizenship

 

Renunciation of Indian Citizenship and Surrender Certificate for those who have acquired foreign Nationality on or after 01/06/2010:

 

Application for Renunciation of Indian Citizenship has to be applied online in the Ministry of Home Affairs (Foreigners Division) website: online Indian Citizenship (indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in)

 

[The applicant has to click on “Declaration of Renunciation of Citizenship under Section 8 of the Act Made by a Citizen of India who is also a Citizen or National of another country” The renouncer would fill all his/her details and upload relevant documents in above mentioned website and pay the prescribed fees online Rs. 8000/-].

Note : Once the application form is submitted online by the applicant, then no further modifications are allowed. Hence applicants are requested to carefully verify the details before submitting the online Application form.

Applicant is required to submit following document at the Embassy : -

(i) Printed application form duly signed in the box

(ii) Submit one passport size colour photos [5 cm x 5 cm]

(iii) The applicant needs to sign first page of Form XXII. The second page of Form XXII will be signed by witness who vouch correctness of the statements made by the applicant.

(iv) Copy of Indian Passport

(v) Copy of Foreign Passport

(vi) Other documents issued by Government of India that needs to be surrender

(vii) Payment proof

Note : For minors, only Application form for the surrender of Indian passport has to be submitted along with parent’s documents.

 

(b) Surrender of Indian Passport

To surrender your Indian passport, please complete the application on the following web portal: https://mportal.passportindia.gov.in

Please note that the applicant is required to upload a recent photograph, signature, and scanned copies of the current passport (both front and back pages) on the portal.

The following documents must be submitted at the Embassy:

(i) A printed copy of the completed application form, duly signed
(ii) One photograph (5 cm x 5 cm) to be pasted on the application form. This must be the same photo uploaded on the portal during the application process
(iii) Original Indian passport, Voter ID card and Ration Card (wherever applicable)
(iv) Proof of payment of €25 (including ICWF charges)
