Celebration of Ganga's 50th Birthday

On the occasion of World Elephant Day, Embassy of India joined hands with the management of Ljubljana Zoo to mark the 50th birthday of the Indian elephant ‘Ganga’ who has been a resident and star attraction of Ljubljana ZOO for 48 years.

2. Ambassador Amit Narang joined Ms. Barbara Mihelič, Director of the Ljubljana ZOO to celebrate the event in the presence of a large number of wildlife enthusiasts from Slovenia and India. Speaking to the gathering, Ambassador emphasised that Ganga is a wonderful testament to India-Slovenia friendship and reminds us of the importance of humanity, connections and relations that cross all barriers to bring us together as common citizens of planet Earth. The event also featured an invocation of Lord Ganesha by a group of Slovenian Bharatnatyam danseuses from Salam Ghazeea group. A book titled 'Ganga – 50 years Ambassador of Elephants and Endangered Wildlife' was published and released by Ljubljana Zoo. The people connected with Ganga’s upkeeping and care were also felicitated. A photography exhibition dedicated to Ganga's life story from her arrival to daily care and coexistence with people is also on display near the iconic Ljubljana river put by the Ljubljana ZOO.

3. Elephant Ganga arrived from India in 1977 when she was two years old. Ganga is the first elephant to have come to Slovenia and one of the icons of the Ljubljana ZOO.
